San Ramon Business Expo 2010

Last Thursday night I went with Ann Uawithya to the
San Ramon Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Mixer at The Bridges Golf Club. It was a fun night, I made lots of new connects for PTK, and I gained a greater understanding of our community's businesses. Thank you to DVC and Ann for giving me the opportunity to represent the college and PTK at this event.

4th JULY “RED, WHITE, & BLUE PICNIC” SUCCESS

Our SRVC Executive Dean, Kevin Horan, approached Rene our PTK advisor, and asked if PTK would like to be part of the DVC booth at the new “Red, White, & Blue Picnic” in San Ramon Central Park which was going to be held with the fireworks held at Bishop Ranch. Rene asked me and of course I said yes, as Kevin was also offering us this opportunity as a fundraiser.

Over the next few weeks I met with Kevin and Ann Uawithya, our Student Services & Instructional Support Coordinator, to organize the details. Kevin very graciously ordered two huge banners for the day, all the glitter tattoo product, organised tables, chairs, and two tents. Ann and I organised the volunteers, and collecting the other items needed for the day.

Sunday arrived, the weather was great and we were ready. My husband and I met Kevin at the college to load up all the tables, chairs, etc, into the back of the truck. We drove to San Ramon Central Park and set up our two tents on the basketball court. Shortly afterwards our first shift of volunteers arrived to help us to finish putting our booth together, 4th of July decorations included. Before we had even finished setting up we had our first customer. This was the start of a brilliant day!

We had a good steady stream of customers throughout the day. We had five different tattoo stencils for the kids to choose from, and many different glitter colours to go with them. Our most popular request was an American flag in the shape of a heart, followed by a flower tattoo and pirate tattoo. Our volunteers were great, all learning how to use the tattoos on the day. They all did a terrific job.

After we packed up the truck and watched the fireworks with our families, a couple of us met Kevin back at the college to unload. It was a very long day for myself and Kevin, but it was so worth it as the day was a huge success. Thank you to the college and all our volunteers for helping our glitter tattoo 4th of July booth be a day of fun, new friends, and successful fundraising for PTK.

Honors Study Topic

From PTK's website:
We invite you to put Honors into action by exploring the 2010 - 2011 Honors Study Topic, The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril and Promise. This topic is controversial and consequential, and therefore worthy of our consideration. It provides the basis for Honors in Action projects for individuals, chapters and regions to learn, lead, serve and collaborate with others. In essence, all four Hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa make up the critical elements of Honors in Action projects: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. This Honors Study Topic affects us all - how we study, shop, socialize, share our passions and develop ideas to address the world's challenges. Imaging the incredible potential for impact when thousands of Phi Theta Kappa honor students focus their attention and efforts in the same area: The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril and Promise! How will it change you?

AT our last meeting, the officers decided to take on the action called "Local Markets". For more information go to http://http://www.ptk.org/honors/guide/issue-6-economy-and-business/

We are always open to ideas and very much welcome participation from our members, so please contact us if you would like to help.
